OCR: filming, I sat down with Whoopi and a few of her friends in her trailer and watched parts of "Comic Relief" on her VCR. She'd been so busy the night of the show that she hadn't seen most of it. Afterward, I asked her how she develops her material and goes through the process of weeding out what works from what doesn't. Whoopi feels you can't just go right to the Comedy Store or the Improv to try out new material. She likes to work the small rooms in Las Vegas because you get a wider range of people. "You get everybody," she says. "You get nuns, you get traveling midgets on horseback, you get everything. And after three or four nights you know if the material is strong enough to stand. And you can do it anywhere, and it doesn't kill you." I finished up my pictures with Whoopi in October on a return trip to Los Angeles. It was a busy time for MENU
